HM Naval Base Clyde
Glasgow Clyde North also has a close training relationship with the Medical Centre in HM Naval Base Clyde, Faslane which is an accredited training practice for MOD GPSTs who integrate with the training group and local NHS practices.
The base Medical Centre has a large (military and civilian) GP team and MDT with on-site MSK rehabilitation and Mental Health facilities. They look after the healthcare of approximately 5000 Service Personnel (Royal Navy Sailors, Submariners and Royal Marines). The base is the home of the UK Submarine Service but also hosts 600 Royal Marines who provide security for the nuclear submarines and weapons and deploy on high level security operations worldwide. It is also a port for Ship’s such as Mine Sweepers, who provide a continuous security presence in the Arabian Gulf as well as other visiting Ships of the Royal Navy or NATO Allies.
More recently the base is piloting an innovative placement to host NHS trainees for a portion of the week for 6 month placements. This will allow interested GPSTs an opportunity to explore areas of Occupational, Operational Stress related illness, MSK/Rehabilitation Medicine and also understand how the military and their families integrates into the local community and also considering Veteran’s healthcare.
